A former Smithfield police officer appeared in court following his indictment.

A former Smithfield police officer and current member of the Johnston County School board has been indicted on multiple charges and appeared in court. Ronald Johnson is accused of trying to extort former Congressional candidate Devan Barbour. The charges also include three counts of willfully failing to discharge duties and felony obstruction of justice. Special prosecutor Boz Zellinger disclosed during the court appearance that Johnson had an affair with a woman and used her to gather information on the candidate. Johnson was given a $50,000 unsecured bond. CBS 17 attempted to contact Johnson’s attorney for comment but was unsuccessful. Barbour has not yet responded to requests for comment.
