The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating a crash involving a Tesla that hit a student who had just stepped off a school bus in North Carolina. The agency sent special investigators to probe the March 15 crash that injured the 17-year-old student. The State Highway Patrol revealed that the driver of the 2022 Tesla Model Y, a 51-year-old man, failed to stop for the bus which had activated all of its warning devices. The device in question is likely either Autopilot or “Full Self-Driving,” both of which are purportedly driver-assist systems that require drivers to be ready to intervene at any time. Tesla was not immediately available for comment regarding the matter. According to the Highway Patrol, Tillman Mitchell, the student from the Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School in Hollister, was walking across the street to his home when he was hit. Although he was flown to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, he was listed in good condition two days after the crash. The NHTSA has deployed investigative teams to more than 30 accidents that have occurred since 2016 in which Teslas have hit parked emergency vehicles, motorcyclists, pedestrians, and semi trailers. At least 14 people were killed in the accidents.
